Six Pics: The Museum of World Treasures in Wichita, Kansas

For the next edition of Six Pics, I'm diverting away from my standard Greece coverage to focus back on the lovely city I've been working in for the last couple months: Wichita, Kansas! Wichita is home to several museums - Cowtown, The Wichita Art Museum, and The Exploration Place to name a few. But my favorite has to be The Museum of World Treasures - an Indiana Jones-like collection of oddities and curios from all corners of the world. In this Six Pics, I'm sharing six of my favorites 'treasures' from a recent visit to the museum. Berlin Wall I've come across a few segments of the Berlin...

Exploring Outer Space In Broad Daylight at the Griffith Observatory

Man must rise above the Earth—to the top of the atmosphere and beyond—for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives. - Socrates The Griffith Observatory is a stronghold of space, a command center of the cosmos. And every night up to 600 people filter through its hallowed halls to peer through the original telescope installed on the roof of the observatory in 1935. Planets, moons, comets, and other celestial bodies have all been objects of attention from this regal collection of tubes, mirrors, and lenses perched atop the classic art-deco structure. In business travel, business always comes before travel in regards to my priorities on the road. In other words, I have to take care of things in the office before I can enjoy the sites of whatever city I may be in. At times, this has posed significant challenges and limitations to what I can see and do on a given trip. Many attractions keep limited hours, and it’s not uncommon for most museums, cultural institutions, and historic sites to shut their doors right at 5:00. Unfortunately, I generally have to maintain a presence in the office for an hour or two after most of these sites close their...

MoMA PS1 Art Museum in New York City – Unexpected Gallery Surprises

Many visitors to New York City are familiar with the Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA for short. On its walls hang some of the most breathtaking and beautiful pieces of art in the world. The collection includes luminaries such as Van Gogh, Dali, and Matisse. Paintings such as 'Starry Night' and 'Persistence of Memory' draw visitors from all over the world. However, less than three miles away in Long Island City, Queens, there is a second lesser known MoMA - MoMA PS1; so called because the museum is in a former New York Public School that last closed its doors to students in 1963. 13 years later,...
