The Churches of Greece in Black and White: A Photo Essay
Wandering around the alleyways and narrow streets of the cities on the Greek Islands, I was absolutely blown away by the sheer number of churches and cathedrals dotting the landscape. Small white chapels, early Christian sanctuaries, and magnificent blue domes are found on hilltops, in town squares, and in undiscovered alleys all throughout the Greek Islands. And while I’m not a particularly religious person, I do appreciate the architecture of these spectacular buildings and their integration with the surrounding landscape.
the iconic dome in the Santorini Caldera – Oia, Santorini
bell tower overlooking the Santorini Caldera - Oia, Santorini
simple cross on blue dome – Parikia, Paros
Cathedral of Zoodochos – Naxos, Naxos
Santorini domes – Oia, Santorini
tile roof on Byzantine church – Parikia, Paros
early Christian church from ~3rd Century – Naxos
interior of Mykonos harbor side chapel – Chora, Mykonos
rural church – between Parikia and Naoussa, Paros

Stunning photography, John! I’m used to seeing pictures from Greece in color, especially those showing buildings with white-washed walls and colorful roofs. Your b&w photo essay shows the sheer beauty of the architecture, well-done. My favorite picture in the set is the one of the roof on the Byzantine church – I like the close-up.

Thanks Pola. I like B&W for certain occasions when I really want to focus on form. This definitely fit the bill.
Great shots. Churches make for some of the best photography opportunities. I love the ones with the round dome.

Thanks Scott. I agree, there are so many amazing photo ops at churches, inside and out.

Great photos! Love Greece, little bit biased though. You should check out Meteora when in Greece next, amazing monasteries in rocks, in the middle on no where! (not churches, but same same) ! Cheers
I think my favorite is the one in Mykonos because that is a great song by the Fleet Foxes. I know it is a dumb reason to choose that as a favorite, but they are all great pictures, so it works as a tie breaker.

Of course, all are beautiful, but I really like the tile room. I like the texture mixed with the black and white and the more ornate cross. Well done. Black and white are my absolute favorites. I have them all over my house, even when the photo looks better in color. Just something about B&W.

It’s certainly different from the others, being an indoor shot. It was such a picturesque little chapel.
You always see Greece portrayed in all its colors. It’s a lot different to see it depicted like this.

I figured I’d be giving the colors of Greece enough love in the other posts…this was a way to take an alternative look at it.
The Greek islands offer so many opportunities for great photography! I like the B&W twist you put on them.

I know I’ve said it before, but being in Greece is like cheating at photography, there are so many incredible scenes to photograph.
